SOGIE #4: Hormones are Powerful: 101 on the Endocrine System

Event Summary

May 16, 2024
9:00 am - 11:30 am

CEUs: Prevention, CHES
2.5 hours
Domains: P2: Prevention Education & Service Delivery

Description: Hey, didn’t we cover the Endocrine System in school? I’m sure that you have basics on the Cardiovascular System, and, when considering the Digestive System, I know you know where your Taco Bell goes in and comes out. However, for various reasons that we will briefly explore, the Endocrine System, including sexual and reproductive anatomy, often wasn't a top priority in our education. And that's a shame because understanding how all these pieces parts function, or don't function, or could function differently is valuable information that we can carry throughout our lives. Knowing the basics of body parts and functions can be incredibly useful when providing prevention support to those you provide services—and for yourself.

This professional development opportunity will provide contemporary scholarship, national data, and credible resources, along with tips and techniques for understanding and supporting youth and families. Participants will hear from an experienced educator who has decades of experience presenting 'delicate and difficult' material in comfortable and comforting ways, allowing individuals to take what they need. Participants are encouraged to join the conversation, share comments, questions, and concerns so that we can fully explore the benefits of understanding one of the most misunderstood of the body's systems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to offer accurate information about how bodies grow, develop, and function.
  2. Participants will be able to identify medically accurate names and phisological functions for sexual and reproductive anatomy.
  3. Participants will be able to identify 3 ways the endocrine system affects our bodies regardless of sex assigned at birth.
