Description:

A trauma informed, resilience-oriented prevention program prioritizes the wellbeing of service providers/staff, preventing compassion fatigue and burnout while scaffolding healthy interactions with consumers who are impacted by toxic stress and trauma. Trauma presents systemic problems in family, school and social environments. What impact does trauma informed care practices have on provider and stakeholders? This workshop will answer that question while allowing providers to understand Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES).

1 in 6 adults have experienced 4 or more Adverse Childhood Experiences. Providers fall into this category while impacting consumers who subsequently are also experiencing traumas. This trauma and toxic stress impacts relationships, brain development, behavior, and decisions to mask the trauma with substances. The Intersectionality of unaddressed trauma on co-occurring health disorders, especially in communities marginalized by poverty can be documented by ever increasing health concerns that are disproportionate to other populations. Trauma can live under the surface, but it cannot be ignored, as it impacts everything in its view, health, wellness, relationships and substance use.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the role trauma plays in co-occurring disorders (Defining trauma and intersectionality)
  2. Understand the impact of poverty on trauma and health
  3. Use text: What Happened to you? and The Body Keeps Score- to Examine health related disorders exasperated by trauma (Diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity)
  4. Review Statistical data of co-occurring disorders impacted by unaddressed trauma
  5. Examine Strategies for the provider to use SAMHSA’s Dimensions of Wellness to create trauma informed interventions
