10:00 am - 12:00 pm

CEUs: Prevention, CHES
2 hours
Domain: P6: Professional Growth & Responsiblity

Description:

This interactive virtual training provides prevention professionals with a research-informed understanding of how mental, emotional, and behavioral (MEB) health disorders commonly co-occur with substance use across the lifespan—especially among youth and young adults. Participants will explore current national and Ohio-specific trends, risk and protective factors, and the shared drivers behind co-occurring disorders. Through case examples, small-group breakout discussions, and practical tools, attendees will learn how to better recognize early warning signs and integrate prevention strategies that address both mental health and substance use simultaneously. The session emphasizes trauma-informed, culturally responsive approaches and highlights evidence-based interventions that programs can adopt or strengthen. Participants will leave with actionable steps and a resource toolkit to support integrated prevention in their communities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the relationship between common MEB disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, trauma-related conditions) and substance use, including shared risk and protective factors.
  2. Analyze case scenarios to identify signs of co-occurring concerns and determine appropriate prevention and early-intervention responses.
  3. Apply at least three integrated prevention strategies that reduce risk and promote resilience for individuals and communities experiencing or at risk for co-occurring disorders.
